DC kicks off the digital comic series Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, a sequel story to the animated film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment o the same name. The 12-chapter comic series from writer Jeff Parker will follow Amanda Waller as she looks for an escape - from death. The first chapter is available now.

Warning: There are potential spoilers for the film in the comic description below! Proceed with caution.

SUICIDE SQUAD: HELL TO PAY #1

Written by: Jeff Parker
Pencils by: Matthew Dow Smith

Amanda Waller’s Task Force X has completed another mission - and in her opinion, the prize was worth the price they paid. But with the Spectre closing in to take Waller’s soul, she must find a new means of escaping death. Now looking to Jason Blood as a possible ally, Waller may face a revolt from her own team for this latest addition to the Squad. Is membership in the Suicide Squad really better than imprisonment at Belle Reve?

The weekly series will run for 12 chapters, written by Jeff Parker, beginning with illustrations from Matthew Dow Smith, with future chapters from artists Agustin Padilla, Stefano Raffaele and Cat Staggs.

I wonder if the person inside the limo with Waller is a certain blue-collar wizard with the initials J.C.? Though I suppose it makes more sense that Waller is already with Jason Blood. Her passenger doesn't really 'sound' like Constantine.

At first thought, it seems truly dumb to start a sequel comic before the actually movie releases. And yep, there appear to be spoilers mainly about some characters that die.

But to complicate this even more, Waller has a session with Jason Blood. So unless something happened in the movie, Hell to Pay and this comic has to take place before Justice League Dark. I hope they bothered to consult with the crew at WBA led by Tucker...

Cheeky to fit in a reference to the live action Suicide Squad movie.

EDIT: Tucker weighs in on a couple things.

-"No I’m guessing they must have seen a copy of the finished movie and not only given a script since it concerns a plot point I added after we started storyboarding. It was a great read as usual from Jeff Parker."
-"Yes, it would’ve had to happen before our JL Dark movie for Jason to be there but I don’t think there’s anything in SS:H2P that would contradict it so it’s fine with me. Trying to have a continuity between movies hasn’t been easy lol"

If you haven't seen the movie yet are don't want spoilers, this issue addresses Scandal and Knockout.

Enjoyed Waller's precautions for Chimera. She and Boomerang totally called it last issue.

Looking forward to seeing how Waller is going to get intel on the Amaurex Key without saying too much and thus influencing Scandal herself to go after it. I wonder if Savage's captains are name characters and could pop up in this series.

I've been really enjoying this comic series so far. It's a great continuation of the movie and the writing has been really great. I do wish the art was a little better though.

And the first KIA of the comic was Coyote. Digest in peace.

Figures Waller wanted Giganta for a potential squad mission in the future..

Interesting Waller hired Deadshot to assassinate some head of state as a cover for the squad's mission and she's still fickle with not following her instructions, lol. Killshot reference as well.

So Blood wants to summon a spirit in a graveyard in Boston. Hmm.

Nice nod to French Louisiana lore with the Rougarou.

That last panel... not how you often see Waller.

Boston! So odd seeing them in the Public Garden and Harley fangirling about the swans. Nice bit with Waller mentioning Aquaman and Chimera tore up the waterfront at some point.

Wondered if Chimera would assume Coombs' appearance but his assessment of that person being weak makes sense.

Nice touch they built on Waller's notes that Bane declined Venom and revealed here that the Venom Tubes during the Recovery mission were just props to intimidate the zealots.

Polaris equating six hours to a lifetime ago in "drug time" was amusing.

Blood's explanation about the arrangement of graves and twilight was interesting. Laughed the spectral lens were repurposed old school 3D glasses.

Gentleman Ghost should be a fun antagonist for the squad. Great writing for Waller to have some Nth Metal bullets on hand. But taking a punch from a possessed Bane... I bet this 'assistant' Blood arranged for will end up defeating Gentleman Ghost. Still think it's Deadman.

Deadman for the win! The synopsis sure was wrong. He came in real handy. Though, Gentleman Ghost, was pretty off with his 1400/1500 years line. In JLD, we learned Jason and Etrigan were bound for 500 years.

Off to Paris now it seems.

That's got to be Grundy who has the key. Hoo boy.

And Scandal found out Waller tipped off the cult to go after her ship. Double hoo boy.

And Deadshot found Waller. Triple...
