Leggo my Eggo, mouth breather!
Over at the Technodrome forums, someone involving with Nick (TV's Kyle, a noted cartoonist who I believe was a member of these boards at one point), spilled a few details regarding the new TMNT cartoon:
Hey guys. I work at Nickelodeon on *ahem* Fanboy and Chum Chum. They had a studio screening of the TMNT pilot in full color animatic form. I can't tell you much about it because I don't want to get fired, of course. Here's what I can tell you:
-The show will be in CG. They showed us a little test clip of Leo swinging his katana around. It looked amazing.
-This is a big reboot. They are not afraid to change things drastically to make the story they want to tell better including character relationships. This is a completely new Turtle universe.
-The show has found a really nice place between action and comedy. The action is impressive and the comedy is truly laugh out loud funny.
-This version of the turtles focusses far, far more on the "teenage" part than any other previous versions of the turtles. This is a good thing. It really brings something fresh and new to the concept.
Bonus info: I watched this sat next to my Fanboy and Chum Chum director, Mr Ken Mitchroney. He agreed, "they nailed it".
I can't really answer more than that, but having been a turtle fan since 1987, this is exciting stuff.
What I saw wasn't a full pilot, but a full-color animatic. An animatic is essentially a presentation of the storyboard. They're not usually in color like this, however. No clue on a release date, but if they really get moving from now, they could have some stuff ready by the end of the year, I bet. That's pure speculation on my part. I have no idea how the network intends to proceed. I doubt they'll rush it. With this much hit potential on their hands, you can bet they'll tread very strategically.
This version of turtles seems to have something for a broader age range than any previous version, imo. I don't consider the show campy. The laughs are genuine and the story hits all the right beats.
I only saw a small clip of actual animation, so it's hard to say. I can tell you that there are a lot of Teen Titans folks on the show and it shows-- and while I liked Teen Titans, this show seems far more consistent in tone and quality.
I can tell you this: The little clip of actual animation I saw was impressive, and the level of CG on our network (Fanboy, Penguins, the upcoming Kung Fu Panda) is bar-raising for TV, imo.
I only happen to know who one of the other voice actors is, and I couldn't figure out the rest by listening. Regardless, if you guys don't know, I probably shouldn't be telling you.
