What was the one game you were hoping to get out of the Ubisoft press conference this afternoon? What was the one game you’ve been waiting to turn up during the last five to seven Ubisoft press conferences? Today was finally the day, buddy. Michel Ancel’s long, long, LONG awaited follow-up to Beyond Good And Evil (a game that came out for the PS2 back in 2003) is finally a reality.

The original BG&E was an action-adventure game that took place in the exotic world of Hillys, revolving around a streetwise photographer and her giant pig pal as they gathered evidence to take down the villainous DomZ. Beyond Good And Evil 2 takes place many years before that happened, starring a nameless new protagonist and her liberally swearing pirate monkey pal.

Gabrielle Shrager, narrative director at Ubisoft, explained that “Our story takes place before the birth of Jade in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural human society in a distant solar system. It is a time when corporations create hybrids in their labs and enslave them to colonize the stars in order to compete for power and cosmic resources. With our crew of crazy and unforgettable characters, we fight in the name of freedom and the right to determine our own fate among the stars. And we will helm massive star-faring vessels through territories as spectacular as they are dangerous.”

The question everyone has on their mind right now is what kind of gameplay awaits them. Ubisoft mentioned “a massive, seamless online environment,” but if that means an MMO or anything close to it, most of the fans who played the original are going to be disappointed. The game will definitely be bigger than the first, with multiple planets to visit in a large solar system called System 3.

Beyond Good And Evil 2 has no announced release date or window, and if we had to guess, we’d place our bets on a new trailer for the game being shown during E3 one year from now. Hopefully the wait will be worth it.
