I was surprised to see there would be an Avatar: The Last AirbenderThe Legend of Korra panel on this year’s San Diego Comic-Con schedule since both shows have finished their run on Nickelodeon, plus both co-creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, said last year’s panel would be their last San Diego panel.  I guess they just meant the last San Diego panel for the TV show.  This year’s panel with Konietzko and DiMartino talked about the continuation of the series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, via the graphic novels written by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by Gurihiru published by Dark Horse Comics.  Despite Avatar ending in 2008, the comics have addressed many questions that were left hanging at the end of the series, including the fate of Zuko’s mother.  Konietzko and DiMartino said the new series, Avatar: The Last Airbender: Smoke and Mirrors, coming out from Dark Horse in October, will deal with Zuko bringing his mother back to the Fire Nation where he also will have to deal with a new faction who still supports his deposed father, Ozai.

The big announcement was that The Legend of Korra too will continue via Dark Horse Comics!  Although both creators have gone on to do other projects, DiMartino will be writing the new Korra comic series which will deal with Korra’s relationship with Asami and the aftermath of The Republic from the TV series finale.  The crowd roared with delight from the announcement, and DiMartino and Konietzko encouraged them to Tweet and post this across the internet.  Indeed, it was a good day for Avatar and Korra fans eager for more stories from their favorite shows.
