Xenoblade Chronicles X Coming To Nintendo Switch At Last

Xenoblade Chronicles X

We suppose the silver lining to releasing a flop console (the Wii U) is that you can use its underexposed library to fill in the gaps on a stronger-performing machine (the Switch) during its lean times. Convenient, right? As we enter the Switch’s twilight years, just about every first-party Wii U exclusive has been given second life there, with one exception: Xenoblade Chronicles X.

X is an oddity, unintended to be part of the main series. There’s less of an emphasis on story and more on exploration. It leans more heavily on sci-fi than the main series, with its characters explicitly coming from Earth instead of being “Homs” who live on a dead god’s body. From the space colony of New Los Angeles — your hub base — you set out to document the wonders and dangers of Planet Mira in your giant mech suit. Fighting is different, the feel is different — it’s an odd duck.

And it’s that odd-ness that made everyone fear Xenoblade Chronicles X would remain trapped on the Wii U forever. Those who enjoyed it have had to watch title after title escape to the Switch’s lifeboat while X remained on the wreck of the Titanic. It’s one of the Wii U games that still fetches high prices on eBay…though perhaps not for much longer. It took until the eleventh hour, but this game finally made it over.

This will be the “Definitive Edition” of Xenoblade Chronicles X, with enhanced visuals and an expanded storyline (critics dinged the original game for being light on plot; this is Monolith’s chance to address that criticism). Other features will be added as well that have yet to be announced.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will be released for the Switch March 20, 2025. Is there anything left as a Wii U exclusive? Yeah….I’m still wishing NES Remix 1 & 2 would come over, but with the existence of the (inferior) NES Championship Edition, that looks unlikely.
