Wonder Woman has finally found a battle she cannot win – at least for now – as the DC Comics superhero has had her appointment as an honorary ambassador to the United Nations stripped after only two months due to protests from women’s equality groups and some U.N. employees, who objected to her ample physical appearance.
Wonder Woman was awarded the honorary title in a ceremony on October 21, 2016, but since then, an online petition signed by nearly 45,000 asked U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reconsider selection of the character and her honorary term will end on Friday, December 16, 2016.
Despite the end of the honorary term, Wonder Woman-themed campaigns for women’s empowerment in association with the U.N. are still scheduled to occur in 2017.
