Given the epidemic of the Coronavirus, a lot of movies have either been delayed, postponed, gone straight from movies to on-demand services, and more. Many were hoping that the movie Wonder Woman 1984 would be the first movie to welcome them back once the epidemic lifted. And indeed, Warner Bros did start out by having that as the plan. But now, with the epidemic continuing to grow without signs of stopping for at least two months, the movie has been pushed back.
Reports of this started coming out earlier today, but then, to truly prove it was happening, both star Gal Gadot and Director Patty Jenkins went onto Twitter to make it clear that the movie has been delayed, and to give a new date as to when you can expect it:
We made Wonder Woman 1984 for the big screen and I believe in the power of cinema. In these terrible times, when theater owners are struggling as so many are, we are excited to re-date our film to August 14th 2020 in a theater near you, and pray for better times for all by then pic.twitter.com/85ykQ8x6NE

There are several ironies to this delay. The first of which is that this is the third superhero film to be affected by this epidemic. The first was Bloodshot, which was released in theaters mere days before the shutdowns all over the world, including the United States. The second was Black Widow, which was going to be the first major superhero movie of the summer season, and that movie still doesn’t have a return date as of yet. Even though Marvel assures fans this won’t affect the larger tapestry of the MCU.
Finally, those who remember the process of getting Wonder Woman 1984 will recall that the movie was supposed to release in November of last year. However, the film got pushed back to 2020 because they wanted to release it in June like the original movie. Its original date though was November 2019, a month after Joker was supposed to release.
Thanks to the delay, Joker got more time in the spotlight, and it made over 1 billion dollars. Many expect the same of Wonder Woman 1984 when it finally does get released.
