With many classic Nick Jr shows coming back in one way or another, it’s not a surprise that The Wonder Pets would be among them. The show is coming back in the form of a spinoff called “Wonder Pets: Into The City”. The series will come out on December 13, 2024 on Apple TV, making it the first Nickelodeon show to premiere on Apple TV. Here’s what you need to know.
The original Wonder Pets is a preschool show that first came out on Nick Jr on March 3, 2006, and ran until October 17, 2016. The series focused on a trio of classroom pets, Linny the guinea pig, Tuck the turtle, and Ming Ming the duckling. Whenever an animal is in trouble, they don their special outfits and go out into the world to help those in need. The new show follows a similar premise, but this time, focusing on a new trio of classroom animals, and taking place in New York. Those three are Izzy the Guinea Pig, Tate the Snake, and Zuri the Bunny (respectively voiced by newcomers Victoria Scola-Giampapa, Christopher Sean Cooper Jr., and Vanessa Huszar).
To quote series veteran Jennifer Oxley (who’s returning to helm the new series): “The concept for ‘Wonder Pets: In the City’ sprung from the love and nostalgia for the original series. We wanted to create something that honored the spirit of the original but with a new trio of classroom pets, a jazzy new city location, and deeper storytelling with diverse and inclusive themes –with takeaway messages of teamwork, compassion, empathy, kindness, and the importance of helping others.” This music-forward series also features Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, including Bobby Lopez, Jason Robert Brown, Tom Kitt, Matthew Sklar and Larry Hochman, and is accompanied by the FILMharmonic Orchestra.
Wonder Pets: In The City is executive produced by Jennifer Oxley and Steven Altiere, and produced by Nickelodeon Animation. Much like the original series, episodes will be composed of 2 11-minute segments. What do you think of the new show? Will you be checking it out?
