What If…? Producer Talks Importance Of The Animated Series

Marvel's What If...?

The Disney+ series were at one point thought of as an “extension” of the MCU, but many questioned not only how good they would be, but whether they would really affect the Marvel universe. Now though, we know EXACTLY how important they are. WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the recently ended Loki have drastically affected the MCU in meaningful ways and even set the stage for Phase 4 and beyond. And apparently, the upcoming What If…? animated series will have a similar effect.

For those who don’t know, the “What If…?” line of comics is the Marvel version of “Elseworlds”, where characters and stories diverge in ways that make you wonder just how different the universe would be if these tales were true. They’ve even helped steer things over time based on the stories presented.

This is the first official MCU animated series, and its producer, Brad Winderbaum, notes that its timing in terms of release, and the stories shown, absolutely make this an “important” series in the MCU as a whole:

“It’s no coincidence that the show picks up right after Loki…The multiverse has erupted in every possible direction,” Winderbaum said during a virtual press event attended by ComicBook.com, adding Marvel Studios’ first animated series “gives us a chance to explore that.”

The setup for this was actually done via Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 where during a bunch of space jumps we met The Watchers, who go and observe the multiverse but don’t intervene. And sure enough, we’ll be “guided” from story to story by The Watcher.

There are a lot of stories already revealed for this franchise, including Peggy Carter becoming Captain Carter, Stephen Strange fighting a darker version of himself, and T’Challa becoming a Ravager.

The series will begin its run on Disney+ on August 11th.
