Did you ever notice how…scattered WB’s home video releases of their classic Looney Tunes library are? Why do the shorts keep getting packaged as a trail mix of decades, when most of the collectors who make up the market prefer chronological order?

Who knows, but that practice may be coming to an end. It depends on the response to Porky Pig 101, WB’s first Looney Tunes DVD that reprints the shorts in the order they came out. This one goes all the way back to the beginning of Looney Tunes as we know it with all 99 black-and-white Porky Pig ‘toons, plus two of the first color ones to make the number 101.

Unlike most of the WB Archive releases, Porky Pig 101 will include a bounty of bonus features, including the all-important commentaries from animation historians like Greg Ford, Michael Barrier and Jerry Beck. The collection reaches all the way back to 1935 and includes every Porky short up to 1943.

Serious collectors may want to act quickly. The first shipments of Porky Pig 101 will be traditionally-pressed DVDs, but will eventually revert to DVD-Rs on demand. The set will cost $47.99, but the rare content is well worth it, and it sends a message to WB that we’d like more serious releases like this. Mark your calendars for September 19, the day Porky Pig 101 goes on sale at the WB Archive website.
