We now know what Frederator Studios’ Castlevania cartoon will look like — and it looks terrific! Netflix announced the release date this morning (July 9) and provided the press with our first look at the animation in motion.
There is still no official plot synopsis, but it appears to be an adaption of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the NES game that revealed how the Belmont family became involved with whipping Dracula into submission every hundred years. This would mean the guy with the whip is Trevor Belmont and the sorceress in the robe is Sypha. The guy throwing daggers could be Grant and the person with the sword might be Dracula’s son Alucard. We’ll see.
Frederator has been given a rare opportunity to create a mature American action cartoon on par with Japan’s best. Let’s hope they can pull it off and that it leads to more mature storytelling in US-produced animation. Castlevania premieres July 7 on Netflix.
