Warner Archive Plans “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” Blu-ray for July 2017

Through social media posts on Facebook and Twitter this Monday evening, Warner Archive has announced plans to release Warner Bros Animation’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on Blu-ray disc for the first time. The release will include the fan favorite film in both the theatrical 16×9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio and an open matte 4×3 (1.37:1) aspect ratio, featuring an obligatory new 1080p high-definition remaster. The release will include English subtitles, a 2.0 Stereo audio track and a high-definition presentation of the movie’s theatrical trailer.

While an exact release date has seemingly not been affirmed yet, Warner Archive’s twitter post announced “next month” for Mask of the Phantasm on Blu-ray disc.

First released in theaters on December 25, 1993, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm represents the first cinematic adventure related to Batman: The Animated Series. The story pits Batman against the titular Phantasm, a vigilante that threatens Batman’s good name and quest for justice via a ruthless vendetta to assassinate the crime bosses of Gotham City. The mystery of the Phantasm’s identity and motivations run parallel to the civilian life of Batman’s alter ego Bruce Wayne, who finds himself revisiting his past when an old flame from the early days of his adult life returns to Gotham.

Phantasm was first conceived as a direct-to-video project before the decision was made to produce it as a theatrical release, and key staff for Batman: The Animated Series were involved in its creation. Bruce W. Timm and Eric Radomski directed, while Alan Burnett conceived the film’s story and scripted it with Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves. Shirley Walker composed the film’s score. Starring voice roles include Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, Efrem Zimbalist Jr as butler Alfred Pennyworth, and Dana Delany (Lois Lane, Superman TAS) as Wayne’s love interest Andrea Beaumont.

Warner Archive posted the following official synopsis with its initial announcement:

When the city’s most feared gangsters are systematically eliminated, the Caped Crusader is blamed. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain, the Phantasm, a sinister figure with some link to Batman’s past. Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his own name?

Unmasking the Phantasm is just one of the twists in this dazzling animated feature. Discover revelations about Batman’s past, his archrival the Joker and Batman’s most grueling battle ever — the choice between his love for a beautiful woman and his vow to be the defender of right. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is “a mystery that is genuinely absorbing, suspenseful and moving” (Cincinnati Enquirer).

  1. Wow…this just made my day and then some!

I will buy this the second it is released…more than happy to "triple dip" on this one…I bought the VHS tape and the original DVD both on the very day that each was released. Also saw the movie at least 5 or 6 times when it did its all-too-brief and way-under-advertised stint in the theaters.

Yes, it's that good…still the best Batman movie ever in my book.

So glad to FINALLY get a Blu-ray copy…any chance the sound might be upgraded to 5.1 surround?

Probably not on the latter, but this is still wonderful, wonderful news.
