Did Todd McFarlane like Venom? What was he looking for in it?
Venom has been one of the surprise hits of the year. It’s one of the highest-grossing superhero films of recent years, and many agree that Tom Hardy as Venom was an inspiring choice. But for co-creator Todd McFarlane, he was just happy that the film made the anti-hero massive.
“He’s a big physical presence,” McFarlane told Collider. “And for me, artistically, I intentionally created a character that was gonna be massive. Why? ‘Cause I just wanted it to be… that if it was gonna be a hand-to-hand fight between Spider-Man and Venom, Peter Parker loses every single time.”
He went on:
“When I went to the premiere of Venom… I had a couple small boxes I wanted to check, but there was only one real box for me,” McFarlane said. “I’m sure, again, David Michelinie, the writer, was looking for something else, right? I’m the visual creator of Venom, so I was looking for the bigness… I just wanted him to be the biggest thing on the screen.”
The film is apparently approved for a sequel, and it’ll likely bring in Carnage as the villain for the film.
