Scooby Doo enthusiasts have speculated for decades, practically since the show began, that Velma Dinkley is sapphic, but it’s something Hanna-Barbera and its later parent company WB were unwilling to explore…until today. In Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! the Great Dane’s latest home video adventure, Velma visibly crushes on a female character.

As the feature opens, Mystery Inc. has finally caught Coco Diablo, mastermind of the costume crime syndicate that’s been responsible for many an incident where someone dressed as a ghost and tried to scare everyone away from a business. But now, even though Coco is in jail, copycat spooks are appearing all over Coolsville, requiring the Gang to team up with Ms. Diablo to put a stop to it all.

Meanwhile, the more time Velma spends with Coco, the more she loses composure. Her glasses even fog up at one point. She eventually realizes, and confesses “I’m crushing big-time, Daphne! What do I do? What do I say?”

It’s actually not the first time a Scooby writer has desired to make Gay Velma canon, but it IS the first time it’s been allowed to go through. In 2020 Tony Cervone, who served as producer on the excellent Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, stated for the record that the Velma on that show was meant to be queer, they just couldn’t say it outright.

Even before that, James Gunn wanted to make Velma’s orientation explicit in his live-action 2002 Scooby Doo movie, but anything even hinting at it was ordered to be removed by executives. “The studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel),” he revealed in a now-deleted tweet.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is now available on digital and will be released to DVD October 18. As for it being able to watch on HBO Max, which would make sense and would normally happen in a non-screwed-up world…..uh, don’t hold your breath.
