USA Today Offers First Peek At Cars 3

USA Today blew the four doors off Cars 3 with an exclusive interview with the director, Brian Fee, as well as the first-published sketches from the production.

The theme of Cars 3 is obsolescence. By now Lightning McQueen has established himself as one of the Car-Dominated World’s top racers, and he’s been around the track quite a few times. Now some younger challengers have started to appear and steal attention away from him, and he’s not sure how to feel about that.

“Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time,” Fee told USA Today. “(McQueen) is not an old man, but he’s one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.” One of these new competitors goes by the name of Jackson Storm.

“Storm is the face of these rookies who have come onto the scene,” says Fee. “And McQueen is in a position where his entire racing generation is being pushed out.  But it’s too early to be shown the door right now.” Fortunately McQueen has a new friend, Cruz Ramirez (in the yellow up there) to help him train and get prepared for the auto equivalent of Millennials (darn car Millennials!)

This movie is due in a year, but it’s very much still under production both animation-wise and story-wise. “We’re still creating the blueprints on some rooms of this house, but we’re starting to paint in other rooms,” as Fee puts it. They still feel they can make the original date, however. Currently Cars 3 is due out June 16, 2017.
