“Toy Story 4” Announced For June 2017, John Lasseter to Direct

Marc Graser of Variety magazine reports that Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Pixar Animation Studios is creating Toy Story 4, with a targeted theatrical release for June of 2017. The announcement came during an earnings call where Mr. Iger discussed Disney’s fourth quarter and fiscal year results with Wall Street analysts.

Mr. Iger also revealed that John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Pixar, Disney Animation Studios and DisneyToon studios, will return as director for the film. This news comes after The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 were announced in March of this year during the annual meeting of the Walt Disney Company; the dates of these films are still undetermined. Before Toy Story 4 Pixar will release Inside Out on June 19, 2015, The Good Dinosaur on November 25, 2015, and Finding Dory on June 17, 2016.

Update, 6:18 PM: A new post on the official blog Disney Insider has elaborated that “The story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich, the storytellers who have been the driving force behind all three Toy Story films.” Galyn Susman (Toy Story of Terror!, Toy Story that Time Forgot) is producing and Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste, Jesse Forever) have joined the writing team for the film. Disney Insider also quotes this statement from John Lasseter:

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”
