The Top 10 Most Epic Generation I Pokemon

pokemon movie

Nintendo may not be doing so hot as a company right now, but the Pokemon franchise has never been stronger. The next generation is coming via Sun/Moon, the anime is still going on, and the original games that were recently re-released have sold over 1.5 million copies. Add that to the hopefully good Pokemon Go, and it’s never been a better time to be a Pokemon fan.

As such, I thought it would be fun to break down the most epic Pokemon from each generation as we get closer to Sun and Moon. These are my personal favorites in the epic category, so while you may disagree, remember these are my choices. Feel free to Pokemon Battle it up with me in the comments. I’ll be doing a generation a month, and I know for some, none beats the original 150. So let’s get started.

Honorable Mention: #25 Pikachu

“Whenever Pikachu comes across something new, it blasts it with a jolt of electricity. If you come across a blackened berry, it’s evidence that this Pokémon mistook the intensity of its charge.”

I know it may be odd that arguably the most recognizable Pokemon ever isn’t on the Top 10 list, but frankly Pikachu is epic because of the TV show. Which isn’t bad in context, but for straight “epicness” Pikachu honestly doesn’t rank that high. He’s epic because we see him every episode, but from a pure looks and effectiveness standpoint…he’s an electric mouse. A cool mouse, but a mouse none-the-less. Even when you account for skills, he’s not the best.

But Pikachu is still a key part of the Pokemon universe, so he deserves this Honorable Mention position.

10. #68 Machamp

“Machamp has the power to hurl anything aside. However, trying to do any work requiring care and dexterity causes its arms to get tangled. This Pokémon tends to leap into action before it thinks.”

If we’re being honest here, this guy is on here just for the sheer fact that he has four arms! I mean look at those things! Machamp is not only the ultimate help in lifting things, but looking cool doing it. When Pokken Tournament was officially announced, Machamp was one of the first reveals, and it’s not hard to see why.

9. #133 Eevee

“Eevee has an unstable genetic makeup that suddenly mutates due to the environment in which it lives. Radiation from various stones causes this Pokémon to evolve.”

Eevee is on the list because while it may not look epic, it’s one of the most versatile Pokemon in the world. So much so that it has possibly dozens of evolutions it can morph into to should the developers want to go down that route. Even in the anime, Eevee was so versatile that a trainer literally raised 6 of them to create Team Eevee, then won the Unova League with said Team Eevee!

No matter what type of Pokemon you like, Eevee most likely has an evolution that’ll compliment it, or be it. Have a foe you wan to defeat easily? Mold your Eevee into the ultimate type killer. All it takes is a little patience, or the right stone, and Eevee can be whatever you want it to be.

8. #143 Snorlax

“Snorlax’s typical day consists of nothing more than eating and sleeping. It is such a docile Pokémon that there are children who use its expansive belly as a place to play.”

Ok, this one will cause some controversy, but go with me here. Why is Snorlax epic? Because it can get away with being super lazy! Think about it! This is our dream people! To eat, sleep, do something if we want, repeat! This is what Snorlax does, and he does it oh so well.

Want more proof? He’s in the game as a part of the story! You have to find a Pokeflute to wake Snorlax up and get it to move. More than that, you can get it via a battle after it wakes up. And as the games and shows have proven, Snorlax is no slouch. He has high HP, and can learn a lot of moves. So wake it up, catch, and have fun!

7. #34 Nidoking

“Nidoking’s thick tail packs enormously destructive power. With one swing, it can topple a metal transmission tower. Once this Pokémon goes on a rampage, there is no stopping it.”

There are times when you look at a Pokemon and go, “That’s boss.” Nidoking is one of those Pokemon for me. While the previous evolutions don’t strike me as too impressive, Nidoking does. He has a presence about him, he even has “king” in his name, that’s powerful stuff. He looks menacing, and powerful. Whether it’s his horn, or his tail, you know you’re going to get hurt. Gary himself had a Nidoking, as did Giovanni, and you know those guys don’t mess around when it comes to picking their Pokemon.

6. #59 Arcanine

“Arcanine is known for its high speed. It is said to be capable of running over 6,200 miles in a single day and night. The fire that blazes wildly within this Pokémon’s body is its source of power.”

One of the struggles of watching a show that has pre-planned stories is that you sometimes come across something that you want to happen, but know there’s a good chance it won’t happen. For Pokemon, it’s seeing a Pokemon you want a character to catch. For me, in regards to Ash, that was Growlith, mainly because I thought it and Arcanine were just so cool looking. Arcanine especially is just an epic looking Pokemon. It looks like a dog and a tiger had a flame fueled cub, and it works!

Not only that, this Pokemon is fast, and a workhorse, just see the Pokedex description above for proof of that. There is no length that Arcanine won’t go to do what is needed for its trainer. That’s pretty epic for me. And again…it looks so cool!

5. #149 Dragonite

“Dragonite is capable of circling the globe in just 16 hours. It is a kindhearted Pokémon that leads lost and foundering ships in a storm to the safety of land.”

Sometimes, an epic Pokemon is just one that combines certain aspects of things we love. That’s Dragonite to a “T”. He’s a dragon, and a big one, but when you look into those eyes, you don’t see a monster, you see Puff The Magic Dragon. Or Pete’s Dragon, or any dragon that’s kindhearted, and that’s exactly what Dragonite is. Now yes, in the show we met a Dragonite who’s basically a jerk, but it happens.

Dragonite was a Pokemon many wanted in the original games, and worked hard to try and get (yours truly included), and being a Dragon-Type meant that it was an incredibly powerful Pokemon to have. Even with all the revisions to the typing of Pokemon, Dragon-Types still rock, and for many, Dragonite is still one of the best of the type.

#4. #123: Scyther

“Scyther is blindingly fast. Its blazing speed enhances the effectiveness of the twin scythes on its forearms. This Pokémon’s scythes are so effective, they can slice through thick logs in one wicked stroke.”

Scyther is definitely an epic Pokemon for looks alone. He has gosh dang scythes as his arms! Yes, I know Kabutops has something similar, but this is better. Bug-Type aren’t the most beloved type at times despite their positives, it’s clear the Pokemon Company wanted to make a few that were epic beyond all reason to bring some love to the type. They totally succeeded with Scyther.

Not only is Scyther a literal slicing machine, it can fly! Making it a Pokemon that can basically control the battlefield depending on its opponent. And as noted in the Pokedex, those scythes can slice through logs with a single chop, and Scyther is mega fast. I often tried to catch Scyther in the Safari Zone or the Bug Contest in Johto, and its still one of my favorite Pokemon.

#3. #6 Charizard

Charizard_Official Art_300dpi

“Charizard flies around the sky in search of powerful opponents. It breathes fire of such great heat that it melts anything. However, it never turns its fiery breath on any opponent weaker than itself.”

Like Pikachu, Charizard is famous in part because of its story in the animes (both of them). However, unlike Pikachu, Charizard just screams “epic Pokemon”. If Dragonite is the dragon you want to call friend, Charizard is the one you’ll call for a warrior that’ll help you burn down the villages of your enemies (Death Battle Reference!)

Despite not being a Dragon-Type (Fire/Flying), Charizard is a dragon through and through. It’s flame is so hot it can melt boulders. It is incredibly fast, and very versatile in its moveset. There’s a reason this guy was the final evolution of Charmander, and as one of the original box art Pokemon, it’s easy to see why people fell in love with Charizard. So much so in fact, that Charizard is one of two Pokemon to have two separate Mega-Evolutions. Can’t have that unless you’re epic!

#2. #9 Blastoise

Blastoise_Official Art_300dpi

“Blastoise has water spouts that protrude from its shell. The water spouts are very accurate. They can shoot bullets of water with enough accuracy to strike empty cans from a distance of over 160 feet.

This one is very personal for me. Pokemon Blue was my first Pokemon game, and of course, Blastoise was on the cover for it. So naturally I picked Squirtle as my starter Pokemon. I never regretted it. Blastoise is one of those Pokemon where it looks epic even if you don’t understand how its defining feature (in this case his water cannons) even works. Who cares!?

Blastoise is a Pokemon you don’t take lightly, between its high defense, and overwhelming water attacks, this Pokemon can take on most anyone. Yes, it has lost numerous times in the shows, but consider the point of the stories behind those losses. In the games, I rarely lost with Blastoise, not even when type wasn’t on my side. This turtle tank is a simple yet effective epic Pokemon, and shall forever be one of my favorites no matter who may come next.

#1. #150 Mewtwo

“Mewtwo is a Pokémon that was created by genetic manipulation. However, even though the scientific power of humans created this Pokémon’s body, they failed to endow Mewtwo with a compassionate heart.”

Him. The line, “There can be only one” truly applies to Mewtwo. He is the world’s first (and only depending on how you see certain things) genetically created Pokemon. Enhancing the DNA of Mew, the scientists desired to create the world’s most powerful Pokemon. They succeeded.

Yes, while you can argue that Mewtwo may not actually be the “World’s Most Powerful Pokemon” anymore, it’s hard to argue how epic he is. From his looks, to his powers, to his importance, Mewtwo is everything a Pokemon can strive to be in terms of pure epicness. He was the star of the first Pokemon movie, and has been in two subsequent ones due to how much fans loved him.

He has been seen in both anime, was a character in Super Smash Bros., and can be found in multiple games only after beating the Elite Four and you becoming champion. Mewtwo was, and is in some ways still, the ultimate goal.

The beautiful thing about Pokemon is that they are infinite in their potential and range. Everyone has Pokemon they love, and some have Pokemon they hate. Even if your favorite didn’t make my list, no worries, they’re epic in your eyes, and that’s what matters. Then, if when Sun/Moon comes out and you see a new Pokemon that becomes one of your favorites? Whether they be epic, cool, cute, or just powerful, there’s nothing wrong with that either.
