Can these heroes help save the DC Animated film franchise? Will we ever get to see them in action?
I can’t believe this year marks the tenth anniversary that DC Comics has made animated films. Like you I have seen every film since Superman: Doomsday, and I’ll be looking forward to the upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn. Since the majority of the franchise are Superman, Batman, and Justice League films. Only Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Teen Titans have their own films. With Suicide Squad getting their own film next year. This leaves fans wanting to know when will we see other heroes have their own film. For this blog, I am going to chronicle the 10 DC heroes who need their own film. Without further ado, let us begin:
10. Booster Gold
I’m not a big fan of this character, he is more of an egotistical, glory-seeking showboat who tries to make a fast buck in the superhero business. He has a historical knowledge of events, but those events affect him in the long run. There’s a rumor that former WWE champion Mike “The Miz” Mizanin would like to be involved. I thought he would be a perfect fit.
9. Blue Beetle
When they remade him, I thought he looked more alien than the classic Ted Kord version. He has been hot since his appearances on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. An origin film about him would be a good concept.
Ever since I remembered him from Challenge of the Super Friends, I thought the character was more human than alien. For Hawkman, the character has to be more alien. My suggestion would be the Hawkworld mini-series which talks about Hawkman’s origin.
7. The Legion of Super-Heroes
I put this on the list because like Teen Titans and Suicide Squad, I don’t want to focus on solo heroes in general. The Legion is a group of heroes from the 30th (and later the 31st) century. It would be hard to find out who would be part of the group with mainstays like Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, and Brainiac 5. I would suggest like Teen Titans did with Justice League Vs. Teen Titans to have the Legion start as a film involving Superman, because he was once a member of the group when he was Superboy.
6. The Atom
Another character who has a long history is Professor Ray Palmer, who became the World’s Tiniest Hero. One good idea to use him would be the classic Sword of the Atom in which he was the hero to a South American tribe who are six inches tall in height.
When they made Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, I thought that it would originally be a solo film with the King of the Seven Seas. Any storyline would be perfect to use, but please do not use the one where he had the deep-blue camouflage costume after Crisis of Infinite Earths.
If there is one hero I would love to see have his own film, it would be the World’s Mightiest Mortal. Billy Batson was chosen by a powerful wizard becomes a superhero by saying the wizard’s name just as he gets hit by lightning. My only problem is what version of Shazam would they consider. Would they consider him being called Captain Marvel, or would they stick to the current New 52/Rebirth concept and calling him Shazam? If they go for the Captain Marvel route, I would see The Power of Shazam! being made from Jerry Ordway’s graphic novel. With the odds that Warner and DC would go on the New 52/Rebirth concept (which they will), I think the Shazam! story from the pages of Justice League would be the better concept.
3. Green Arrow
This character had his own Showcase, but to all of us it’s not enough. Green Arrow has been hot since Arrow, and a film featuring him would be just as good as the series. In my opinion there are two ways I could see an animated Green Arrow film be made. The first would be The Longbow Hunters, which to me was a definite storyline for the Emerald Archer. The other would be the team-up between him and the Green Lantern, preferably the old Denny O’Neil/Neal Adams stories from the 70s.
2. The Flash
30 films have been made, and there is no Flash film. What is wrong with this picture? Flash has got a ton of storylines since he was introduced in 1956, and any story would be perfect. Since Flashpoint is already done (which is a Justice League film, but Flash was the main hero in that one), what about a story involving the Rogues. Better yet, bring the classic story “Flash of Two Worlds” to today’s audience.
For my number 1, I didn’t choose a top hero for the list. I choose a team that has a big connection to the DC Universe in general.
That’s right, before the Justice League, there was the Justice Society of America. All the great heroes from the Golden Age like Hourman, Johnny Thunder, Dr. Midnight, Wildcat, and the original versions of Atom, Hawkman, Green Lantern and The Flash. This was the nucleus of super teams. Trying to find an all-star voice cast would be more like the icing on the cake. Please don’t make the heroes look like the characters from Earth-2.
There you have it, the 10 heroes that should have their own DC Animated movies. Even though we may see another film involving Superman, Batman, or the Justice League like we do every year. DC should listen to us, the fans, and give the ones on the list as well as other heroes a chance. Here’s hoping that we may see these in the next 10 years and beyond.
