Toonami Rewind Coming To Adult Swim May 31

We admit it’s disheartening to see WB pretty much give up on convincing children to watch cable TV again, but on the bright side, look at all this cool stuff we grown-ups get. There’s been a revamp of the classic schedule with Checkered Past, which has been enjoyable, but of course Cartoon Network in the 90s and 2000s was more than just Cartoon Cartoons.

We’re pleased to report the original Toonami is coming back, right into the place it belongs (a weekday afternoon). Toonami Rewind, a throwback block featuring the OG’s greatest hits, will appear every Friday from 5 to 7. The initial lineup includes Sailor Moon (the new Viz dub), an hour of DBZ Kai and the original Naruto.

5:00 p.m. – Sailor Moon (Viz Media’s English dub)
5:30 p.m. – Dragon Ball Z Kai
6:00 p.m. – Dragon Ball Z Kai
6:30 p.m. – Naruto

Note that we put TOM 3 up above, but we actually can’t say for certain which TOM we’re getting for this. Jason DeMarco tweeted “for this version of Toonami we will be using classic older Toonami music and some older packaging (mostly things that were recreated in HD for our anniversary broadcast years ago).” We’re guessing this means TOM 3 because that was the TOM that greeted people during the 2012 April Fools stunt.

It would be nice to replay some of the older video game reviews and “advice” bumpers to complement this, but DeMarco implies they can only use what has survived in the archives and that “most of it is gone.” That’s also why they’re not taking things back to the VERY beginning and using Moltar.

But it’s a great lineup, and what could come next? Gundam Wing? Thundercats? Reboot? HamTaro? (Just kidding.) We suppose it depends on what’s accessible, but just landing Sailor Moon these days is a feat. Toonami Rewind begins Friday, May 31. The modern Toonami will continue its “midnight run” as usual on Saturday nights.
