Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft Coming To Netflix In October

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft

We’ve known for a while Netflix was working on a Tomb Raider anime, but until now, all anyone had seen from it was a two-second clip of main character Lara Croft firing an arrow from a bow. Today Netflix released a bit more footage — thirty seconds’ worth — but a lot is packed into that half-minute.

In no particular order: Lara runs, leaps, jumps down pits, skydives, fires a shotgun, crashes through a window, jumps off a motorcycle into the air, slashes with a jeweled scimitar in a ninja outfit (context unclear), and fires the same arrow again. It’s all very Tomb Raider-y, but it tells us nothing about the general plot. Fortunately we have a synopsis for that.

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft takes place shortly after the Survivor Trilogy ends. “Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures,” Netflix says. “But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.”

If the look of the animation feels familiar, it should: Powerhouse, the studio that animated the Castlevania anime and Masters Of The Universe: Revelation / Revolution, is also working on this one. Seems if Netflix ever needs an anime based on a video game or toy line, they have these guys on speed dial.

Hayley Atwell, Agent Carter herself, provides the voice of Lara here, but there is a returning actor from the games: Earl Baylon will reprise his role as Jonah Maiava. There will also be Allen Maldonado in the role of “Zip,” but other cast members have yet to be revealed.

Since intellectual property rights can be weird things, Amazon Prime is ALSO working on a Tomb Raider show right now, this one being live-action and shepherded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. We haven’t seen a trace of it so presumably we’ll be getting the anime first. Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft premieres October 10 on Netflix.
