The Tomb Raider franchise over the years has had a lot of ups and downs. This is fair when you realize how long this game series has been going on. There are always going to be hiccups and bumps in the road. A major turning point (for the better) was when Crystal Dynamics got the franchise and rebooted the games, then gave them good sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. All of which praised not only the more realistic look to Lara Croft and her abilities but still maintained the wonder of the previous games.

After Shadow though, many wondered what would come next, and whether Crystal Dynamics would be the ones to continue on Lara’s legacy. The answer has now been given as the deve team have tweeted out that they are indeed continuing with the game line, and just as important…they’re putting it on a new engine…

“Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level,” said Crystal Dynamics of the announcement. “That’s why we’re proud to announce that our next #tombraider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5!”

That will indeed be a major improvement, and when you combine that with the next-gen console power of the Xbox Series X and the PS5, you’re going to see arguably the most beautiful title in the franchise yet.

Now, as to what the game will be about, we don’t know, nor do we have a tentative release date for the new game. Considering that Crystal Dynamics is working on various titles right now, it might be fair to guess that it might not be coming around until 2024 at the least.

And as for plot/content, it’s fair to guess that it would be taking place after the trilogy they had made.
