Looking for a new comic book series (or mini-series) to dive into? Unsure of where to start?
Each week, we’re looking to track the latest “entry point” comics – a place to jump into a new series or storyline (usually that will be a new Issue #1, but not always). We’ll provide the cover, the solicitation text, give our thoughts, and generally just encourage you to try out a new comic!
Here’s what’s new this week (March 20th, 2024):
Web of Spider-Man #1: “2024 is primed to be one of the biggest years in Spider-History and you’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg! In the pages of this one-shot, we’re going to lay out some of the biggest upcoming Spider-Stories and characters in the Spider-Verse through the beginning of 2025, and you aren’t going to want to miss this!”
It’s not the start of a new series or mini-series, but it does sound like this is a good entry point for finding out what new Spider-Man storylines are coming out later this year (and on into 2025). It’s unclear if this will be a line-wide relaunch like the upcoming X-Men line of comics, but it’s the start of new Spider-Man stories either way. Plus, that sweet cover by classic “Spawn” artist Greg Capullo….
Star Wars: Jango Fett #1: “JANGO FETT EMBARKS ON A BRAND-NEW MISSION! AS SEEN IN STAR WARS: REVELATIONS! ETHAN SACKS (STAR WARS: BOUNTY HUNTERS) & LUKE ROSS (STAR WARS: WAR OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS, STAR WARS: DARK DROIDS) team up to continue the legacy of one of the greatest bounty hunters: JANGO FETT! A bounty to find! A mystery to solve! A treaty at risk! All this with AURRA SING in the mix!!!”
Burned by the direction Disney took Boba Fett in the Disney+ TV show? Think Mando is too busy playing “Daddy” to “Baby Yoda” in “The Mandalorian”? Don’t need Jedi vs Sith battles for the fate of the galaxy, and you just want a bounty hunter doing cool things? This might be just what we needed (especially if it’s a story in which we avoid Jango’s connections to the Clone Army).
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #25: “WITNESS THE FIRST MEETING BETWEEN THE JOKER AND LEX LUTHOR! Join Batman and Superman as the World’s Finest team celebrates 25 issues of World’s Finest! This oversized special issue takes our heroes around the DCU and beyond—with a special lead story that will at last showcase the first meeting between The Joker and Lex Luthor. The World’s Finest villains form an unholy alliance and will send chills down the spines of the DCU Heroes forevermore! PLUS: Spinning out of the events of the World’s Finest Annual, Doom-Mite strikes and points the way to the next World’s Finest epic!”
Not an “Issue #1” but still a fresh entry point for what’s been an exceptional series. “Lex Luthor and the Joker teaming up” has been done before (most memorably in the Superman/Batman animated series in the late 90’s) but we can trust the ever impressive Mark Waid to get it right. And after the stand alone Luthor/Joker story, it’s onward to the start of a new storyline involving Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite. What’s not to love?
Dawnrunner #1: “A century ago a portal opened over Central America and the Tetza that came through changed our world. Now the world bends all its effort to making the Iron Kings-great mechs that must battle the Tetza for humanity’s continued survival in gladiatorial combat. Anita Marr is the greatest of the pilots and is chosen to pilot a new prototype that could change the tide in humanity’s favor. An all-ages sci-fi epic from rising stars Ram V and Evan Cagle.”
“Ram V” is indeed on the rise as a comic writer (thanks to his run on Detective Comics). Giant mechs with an Aztec/Mayan twist? This sounds like a perfect fusion of fantasy and sci-fi.
Man’s Best #1: “Homeward Bound on an alien world, MAN’S BEST follows three emotional support pets living on the Starship Horizon–a spacecraft searching for a new home to house a humanity compromised by bad decisions and corporate greed.
But after the ship crashes and the crew is captured, these loyal pets are their owner’s only hope. Outfitted in outrageous tech, these three best friends must traverse a hostile world to rescue their owners–leaving them the only hope for a humanity that might not be worth saving. In a harrowing adventure, the pets are faced with challenges that threaten to destroy their most valuable treasure: their friendship.”
This immediately brings to mind the influential Grant Morrison/Franky Quitely comic “We3” from a couple decades ago. Still, the “Homeward Bound” type storyline may provide a more optimistic narrative. Either way, that’s a gorgeous cover.
So what new “entry point” comics are YOU interested in this week?
