Looking for a new comic book series (or mini-series) to dive into? Unsure of where to start?

Each week, we’re looking to track the latest “entry point” comics – a place to jump into a new series or storyline (usually that will be a new Issue #1, but not always). We’ll provide the cover, the solicitation text, give our thoughts, and generally just encourage you to try out a new comic!

Here’s what’s new this week (April 3rd, 2024 – and yes, this is a day late. Our apologies, loyal readers):

Deadpool #1: “A NEW ERA FOR THE MERC WITH A MOUTH, AND A GUN, AND A SWORD… Cody Ziglar (MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN) has a wild ride planned for the Merc with the mouth! Introducing a terrifying new villain who won’t stop until he catches Wade in his DEATH GRIP. But all work and no play makes Deadpool a very dead boy!”

Just in time to tie in with the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine” film, it’s time again for a new Deadpool ongoing! Writer Cody Ziglar is on the rise, and he’s described this run as more of a “workplace comedy”, though preview pages show it will be just as wild as previous Deadpool titles.

Shazam #10: A NEW CREATIVE TEAM DEBUTS! Moving Day! After destroying the family home during an epic battle with Black Adam, Billy has hired the gods who grant him his powers to rebuild it. What surprises await the Shazam Family as they enter their new abode? Find out as a new run brought to you by fan-favorites Josie Campbell (THE NEW CHAMPION OF SHAZAM!) and Emanuela Lupacchino (WORLD’S FINEST: TEEN TITANS) begins!

The new “Shazam” series (started in 2023) has proven to be a delight under Mark Waid, but the fear was a shift in creative teams would derail things, but Josie Campbell is no stranger to providing excellent Shazam storylines. Plus, the artwork by Emanuela Lupacchino is becoming a fan favorite of ours.

Geiger #1:SERIES PREMIERE!

IT ALL STARTS HERE! The critically acclaimed team of storytellers GEOFF JOHNS and GARY FRANK (GEIGER: GROUND ZERO, Doomsday Clock) return to the nuclear wasteland of their bestselling GEIGER for an ALL-NEW ONGOING series starring the violent and unpredictable GLOWING MAN!

Leaving his home behind, Tariq Geiger now walks the radioactive roads of the former United States with his two-headed wolf Barney. But as his enemies doggedly pursue him, Geiger discovers salvation from the unlikeliest of foes. But what secrets does this potential ally hold that could help Geiger? And exactly how many people are after The Glowing Man… and why?

Don’t miss this vital, action-packed chapter in the shared universe of THE UNNAMED saga and the momentous Ghost Machine rollout!”

So if you haven’t heard, “Ghost Machine” is the new imprint under “Image Comics”, featuring numerous comic book industry veterans joining Geoff Johns in created a new shared universe. With the talent involved, this is giving off familiar vibes to the early years of Image Comics’ “creator owned revolution” from the 90’s, and this week sees the launch of several of Johns’ own titles. Each of these are more “science fiction/fantasy” than superhero, and that’s okay. Also, “Geiger” is illustrated by the legendary Gary Frank (a frequent partner of Johns) so it’s a must read.

Red Coat #1: SERIES PREMIERE!

Immortal. Mercenary. Kind of a tool. Meet Simon Pure, the newest UNNAMED hero, created by comic all-stars GEOFF JOHNS (GEIGER) and BRYAN HITCH.

British redcoat and all-around rogue, Simon mysteriously became immortal in 1776 after a run-in with the clandestine cabal known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, John Hancock, and many other prominent American Revolutionary War leaders. Since that fateful day, Simon has led a life of adventure and avarice, rubbing elbows (and sometimes fists) with many of history’s most renowned figures, including his nemesis Benedict Arnold, Albert Einstein, Annie Oakley, and many more. One thing they all agree on: they never want to see him again! But what are the true origins and extent of Simon’s power and the mysterious organization behind them? And how has it secretly shaped America and the world? Simon’s on a quest to find out!

Don’t miss out this new entry in the exciting Ghost Machine rollout—and it’s 34 pages of story for only $3.99!”

Another Geoff Johns title, this one with art by the fantastic Bryan Hitch. And you had me on board at “nemesis Albert Einstein and Annie Oakley”.

Rook: Exodus: “Geoff Johns (Geiger) and Jason Fabok, the celebrated team behind Batman: Three Jokers reunite for an all-new science fiction series! Hundreds of years from now, the man known as Rook was once a simple farmer who fled the crumbling Earth for a new life on the planet Exodus; a terraformed planet where all of nature, including its imported animal population, was completely controlled by humans called Wardens. But when Exodus’s world engine failed, the Wardens’ power fell into the wrong hands, creating chaos and mass evacuation…for those who could afford it. The rest, like Rook, must scavenge for an escape vessel as the war for control of what’s left of Exodus begins.”

Geoff Johns strikes again, and this one appears the most “science fiction” in scope. Frankly, all of these “Ghost Machine” titles look great if you like a departure from superheroes every once in a while.
