Every few weeks the fate of Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2 alternates between greenlit and cancelled. Last month it was taken off the studio’s release schedule. Today, guess what? It’s back on again. Deadline broke the news.

The latest news is that the movie has found a new director: Steven DeKnight. What’s this guy done? He was the creator of Spartacus on Starz and also served as executive producer on season one of Netflix’s Daredevil series…so the man has talent. This, however, will be his first time directing a movie.

While it’s way too early to tell who will be in the finished product (or if it won’t just be cancelled again next month), Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day are expected to return, and creator Guillermo del Toro has expressed interest in bringing Maisie Williams on. He’s also stated that should the sequel see the light of day, it will be “very different” from its predecessor. del Toro would only hint in regards to this that there would be a deeper exploration into the monsters known as the kaiju and where exactly they came from.

Pacific Rim 2 currently has no release date, and I’m not going to even dare to estimate one.
