Ever since Disney acquired Star Wars last decade, it’s made many efforts to expand the Galaxy Far Away with results of varying quality. At best you get [insert your favorite Disney Star Wars product here], at worst you get [insert your least favorite Disney Star Wars product here]. Look, it’s kind of subjective.
The one thing everyone can agree on, though, is that Star Wars Visions rules. An anthology series where each episode is a stand-alone story by a different animation studio, the show is allowed to expand the concept creatively in ways most other SW media can’t. Some of the most well-crafted stories in the canon have been Visions episodes, even if they’re less than a half-hour long.
Until today, no one knew if Star Wars Visions would continue beyond the two seasons that exist on Disney+. But Lucasfilm confirmed it today: there will be a Season 3, and it’s coming sometime in 2025.
Season One of Star Wars Visions was an all-anime production, involving Kamikaze Douga, Geno Studio, Studio Colorido, Kinema Citrus, Production IG and two different shorts from Studio Trigger and Science SARU. Season Two expanded its reach around the world with contributions from Ireland’s Cartoon Saloon, Spain’s El Guiri, India’s 88 Pictures, Chile’s Punkrobot, South Africa’s Triggerfish, South Korea’s Studio Mir, and France’s Studio La Cachette. There was only one studio from Japan that season, D’art Shtajio.
Now for Season Three, Visions is returning to the Land of the Rising Sun with nine more strictly-anime episodes. Kinema Citrus, Production IG, Studio Trigger and Kamikaze Douga (in a co-production with Anima) will return, along with David Production, Polygon Pictures, Project Studio Q and WIT Studio. That’s eight studios, meaning one of them is creating two shorts. At this time we don’t know who the mystery contributor is.
All we do know is that Star Wars Visions isn’t over yet, and a fresh batch of new perspectives on the Force is coming next year.
