Paramount recently released the official trailer for “The Tiger’s Apprentice”, a new animated film coming to Paramount Plus on February 2nd.
The film is a Paramount Plus exclusive, and is based off of the novel of the same name by writer Laurence Yep, known for his children’s literature with a focus on Chinese American protagonists. The film features an all-star cast, such as Michelle Yeoh, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, Henry Golding, Bowen Yang, and Brandon Soo Hoo. From the trailer description, the plot of the film is as follows:
“The life of Chinese-American teenager Tom Lee changes forever when he discovers he is part of a long lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu, Tom trains up to take on Loo, a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. To have a fighting chance against Loo, Tom must reunite all twelve Zodiac animal warriors and master his own newly discovered powers.”

The development of a film based on the novel has had a long history of delays. Cartoon Network first acquired the rights to make a live action adaptation of the novel back in 2008, but the project was scrapped when their “CN Real” line of programming died in 2009. Paramount Pictures announced they had would make an animated feature film in 2019, with “Mikros Animation” being the animation studio chosen to work on the film (their last collaboration with Paramount was 2018’s “Sherlock Gnomes”). The film was originally scheduled to release in theaters in February 2022, but kept experience delays due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Eventually, Paramount cancelled the release in theaters and opted to release the film directly on Paramount Plus.
Animated action/adventure films that are developed for children (not adults, not preschoolers, but for CHILDREN) are in short supply the last few years, so perhaps spread the word: “The Tiger’s Apprentice” launches on February 2nd, exclusively on Paramount Plus.
