The Switch 2 Is The Worst Kept Secret Of 2025

Knowing everything about a console before it’s revealed is not a new phenomenon — Microsoft almost seems to encourage it — but it is new for a place like Nintendo. By far the most secretive of all the video game companies, they guard their secrets with fortress-like security and usually succeed…they’re one of the few who can surprise-drop a big new video game one to two months before release.

But then there’s the Switch 2. It has been in development for quite a while. Developers have possessed dev kits for over a year now. The system has allegedly been finalized and consumer-ready for quite some time, but delayed over the production of software and producing enough units for launch. With all that said, perhaps it’s not that surprising they’ve barely been able to keep a lid on it lately. But it is new to know pretty much everything before Nintendo talks about it.

Here’s what’s out there: the Switch 2 will be slightly larger overall, with a bigger screen. it will use refined Joy-Cons that attach to the system magnetically, and use different sticks that should hopefully eliminate the “stick drift” problem. The right Joy-Con has one extra button labeled “C” that no one knows what is for yet.

The Switch 2 has two USB-C ports on the top and bottom. The leaked chipset revealed 256 GB of internal storage and 12 GB of RAM. A newly revealed patent, which was filed in 2023, suggests the Switch 2 will use image upscaling technology to achieve 4K visuals without needing 4K chips. And it will be backwards compatible with Switch 1 games (this is the one thing Nintendo already admitted).

We might even know what it looks like. At the Consumer Electronics show, third-party accessory maker Genki had to create a mockup of the Switch 2 to show how their products fit with it. They also created a render on their website, which is where this article’s splash image came from.

What it all points to is that we may not have to wait much longer. SKUs for third-party accessories like Genki’s have already begun to show in Gamestop databases. That fact, plus the fact that Nintendo hasn’t really slapped Genki for going public, suggests the official reveal could be weeks away, or possibly even days.

UPDATE: Nintendo has publicly commented, stating for the record Genki’s mockup is not official. “The gaming hardware that Genki presented as Nintendo hardware at CES is unofficial and was not provided to the company by us,” they said.
