The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Blasts Off

It didn’t take long after that Pillsbury cookie leak for Nintendo and Universal to shove the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer out the door, confirming Bowser Jr. for themselves after the box implied it. Actually, it’s more likely the date of this trailer was pre-determined ahead of time and Pillsbury had a legal OK all along. But where’s the fun in that?

The smarter animated trailers feature an entire scene to take in and digest, instead of a whirlwind of cuts and clips that get lost in each other. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer goes this route, devoting half its runtime to the reveal of how Bowser is doing since the events of the previous movie’s climax, where you may recall, he was shrunk to cockroach size and placed in a model of Peach’s castle.

Ever since, Bowser has devoted his ample spare time to becoming a painter. His mini-lair is now full of paint buckets, brushes and his misguided attempts at art, including his latest, a depiction of Peach swooning over an exaggerated muscle-bound version of himself. Mario thinks it’s “trash” and Bowser loses it over the remark, smashing his own painting in rage.

But we do get clips as well, and they include the most important one of all: a look at Rosalina! As a big fan of the character I’d been hoping Illumination does her justice, and they indeed have. The clip they chose to introduce her is quite the wonder to behold. I won’t spoil what she does, except to say….yeah, THAT’S our girl!

Brie Larson has been cast as Princess Roz, while Benny Safdie plays Bowser Jr. The returning voices are the same: Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and like it or hate it, Chris Pratt as Mario.

But you know who this trailer didn’t reveal, or mention anything about? Yoshi. Perhaps that box of cookies had informational value after all. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters April 3, 2026.
