Back when Sonic The Hedgehog 1 came out I predicted “if we get three of these, Shadow will be in the third one.” Behold, I called it. The full trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 was released online this morning, and there are a LOT of electrified black quills in it.
It’s explained to Sonic that though Shadow is a lot like him, their backstories couldn’t be more different. Sonic had no problem finding friends on Earth. But Shadow’s one friend, a little girl named Maria, tragically died and Shadow couldn’t save her. Ever since then he’s been surly and destructive, and can only be contained in a top-secret facility — which he just broke free from. They don’t say her name here, so we don’t know if they kept the “Maria Robotnik” connection.
Speaking of the great mustachioed one, Jim Carrey DID agree to come back and mug for the camera one more time. It’s become a running gag that every time you see Robotnik, he resembles his video game counterpart more and more. He now has the gut and the goggles. Maybe he will assume his full egg shape in Sonic 4, if it happens.
But here’s something you didn’t expect: Shadow is so hard to handle that the team of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles aren’t enough to take him on. That means the enemy of their enemy is now their friend — they will have to TEAM UP with Robotnik to stand a chance. This trailer also managed to reveal something no one knew at all: this movie will introduce Robotnik’s father. (Since Maria was Ivo’s gtanddaughter, this guy must be pretty old, huh?)
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 stars the same cast from the previous two: Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaunghnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as the trio’s Earth “parents.” This new movie adds to the cast Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso), Jorma Taccone (Lonely Island), Alyla Browne (Mad Max Furiosa), James Wolk (Harley Quinn), Sofia Pernas (Jane The Virgin), and of course, Keanu Reeves as Shadow.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 opens December 26.
