When it comes to the world of Pokemon, there is a lot to enjoy. Not the least of which is an anime, several gaming titles, a card game, manga and an infinite number of toys. The team behind this, The Pokemon Company, have been raking in the profits over the last couple of years, and while 2020 is coming to a close soon, a new revelation about 2019 for the company has provided some key insight into just how well its done.
According to License Global, The Pokemon Company made an ASTOUNDING $4.2 BILLION dollars in 2019. That alone would be an impressive feat, but what makes it even more impressive is that this is up from the $2.8 billion that it made back in 2018.
So, why did the Pokemon sales boom in 2019? There are several factors. One of them is that their live-action movie Detective Pikachu came out to theaters and was a surprise hit and was at the time the biggest live-action video game movie ever (which would be replaced by Sonic The Hedgehog in 2020). The other major factor no doubt was the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, which EXPLODED in sales to the extent that it’s over 18 million in sales in less than a year.
Then, of course, there is their mobile game Pokemon GO, which continues to dominate mobile markets all over the world as the team at Niantic is added more and more content, Pokemon and abilities constantly.
So all in all, 2019 was pretty much a perfect storm of things for The Pokemon Company. But, will 2020 be the same when you consider the pandemic situation? More than likely profit will go down, but more because of the lack of major releases. Yes, there is the DLC for Sword and Shield, but not everyone will buy that. Furthermore, the only major other media release for Pokemon in terms of TV/movies is the Pokemon Journeys anime which came to America this year. But that likely won’t have major effects on the franchise sales.
Either way, Pokemon is going to continue to grow and gamers and fans of the franchise can look forward to that.
