Like you, we also wish Netflix wasn’t trying to make a live-action One Piece series. But as mere observers, there’s nothing much we can really do about it. We can appreciate, if anything, the insane amount of work the production crew has in making the massive pirate ships in Oda’s world come to life.

These aren’t CG. They are really building a Going Merry, a Miss Love Duck, the Baratie Bar and other locations from early in the manga’s story. It’s a ton of work and lumber. See for yourself:

The Straw Hats will be made up of Iñaki Godoy as the rubbery optimistic protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as the feared swordsman Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as fearless take-no-crap Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as goofy cowardly Usopp, and Taz Skylar as lovesick Sanji. Other cast members include Morgan Davies as Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy The Pirate Clown, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong and Vincent Regan as Garp.

It all feels like kind of a waste, not just because the show is doomed to flop, not just because Netflix will cancel it after one season anyway, not just because the millions being blown on these could have been spent on keeping their animation studio alive…it’s because after all that work, all these ships will eventually be torn down, and why would you dismantle a real-life Going Merry once you had it?

Even though the Straw Hats use a different ship now, the Merry could easily become a tourist attraction somewhere…or it could be floated to different cities in a nationwide tour (assuming it’s a fully functioning boat). That would also be great publicity for the series, and promotion is something Netflix has always struggled with.

But if they can’t do Bebop right, they will definitely struggle with something like this. One Piece is still in production at Netflix.
