The Mitchells Vs. The Machines

Did you enjoy Sony Pictures’ The Mitchells Vs. The Machines? Depends…do you have two ears and a brain? Critics and audiences agree it’s another solid winner from the Lord Miller production team, the same crew that brought us The Lego Movie and Into The Spider-Verse. It hasn’t left the #1 movie spot since it arrived on Netflix April 30.

The movie landing a Netflix deal has both a good and a bad side…the good is that it’s far easier to see than it would be in a theater, but the bad is that its chances of a Blu-Ray release are pretty much nil now. That means no special features, deleted scenes we’ll never see, and a lack of commentary…though an alternate way of getting insight may be coming up.

The VIEW Conference has announced a live, 90-minute discussion with the filmmakers behind The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. Neither Lord nor Miller will be attending, but it’ll feature feature writer-director Michael Rianda (Gravity Falls), co-director and writer Jeff Rowe (Disenchantment, also Gravity Falls), production designer Lindsey Olivares (several Madagascar movies), head of story Guillermo Martinez (We Bare Bears), VFX supervisor Mike Lasker (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse) and head of character animation Alan Hawkins (Hotel Transylvania). Steven Gaydos of Variety will moderate.

“They say it takes an entire village of people to make a film,” says VIEW Conference Director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “We are delighted to welcome six of the talented villagers behind ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’ into the VIEW Conference family for this free PreVIEW event exploring the craft behind the film. We’re bringing so much creative energy together in one place, I know this is going to be a session to remember.”

At one point called Connected by Sony, The Mitchells Vs The Machines (or The Michelles Vs The Machines, whatever) is technically about a robot uprising, but actually concerns itself more with the problems of Katie Mitchell and her father. She’s leaving for college; he wants one last adventure with her. She wants to make crazy videos; he doesn’t understand them. She wants to get away from her nutty family; he doesn’t perceive his inherent nuttiness. But a road trip fighting off maniacal bots who want to send all humans into space has a way of bringing the survivors closer together.

The chat will be free to watch on the VIEW website through this address — it starts Friday, May 14 at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is viewable now on Netflix.
