When it comes to video game releases, there are two things that video game developers and publishers generally want. The first thing they want is that they desire a critically-acclaimed title. But the second thing, and arguably the most important thing, is that they want a game that really sells. Usually at least a million, and if they’re lucky, many millions. As if there was any doubt, The Last Of Us Part 2 has topped that “many millions” column.
According to the latest NPD numbers obtained by ComicBook.com, The Last Of Us Part 2 not only had a major launch, but it claims that the game had the “biggest launch month of any game this year”. Which means it would have had to do better than Animal Crossing New Horizons which did well over 10 million in a month.
This shouldn’t be too surprising though given that the PS4 had a 100 million+ fan base and the game was easily one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. So many people were going to buy it just to see how the game followed up from the legendary first title.
Which brings us to the irony of the piece, because once the game was played, many gamers voiced disappointment in the story, characters, and choices. Which may affect long-term game sales.
