Here we are in the future. Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe has had a long and successful run, but seven years is a long time for a CN original, and Steven is getting ready to retire. The network announced today the next ten episodes of the series will be its last.

Steven Universe has become one of the flagship programs of CN’s modern era, even if it doesn’t always reliably air on the channel. The show picked up a rabid fanbase, who had to wait months for “Steven Bombs” to appear where multiple episodes were dropped at once. SU was the rare CN show to use a serialized storyline, and had an entire five-season arc plotted out from the beginning, which it was lucky enough to get to do in full.

The series lived beyond that point in the form of 2019’s Steven Universe: The Movie and the epilogue series Steven Universe Future, currently airing now.

In addition to just being awesome, the show broke several barriers in animation, from being the first “kiddie” show to openly depict LBGTQ relationships, to just being a cartoon created by a woman. It’s ridiculous it took this long, but thanks to Steven’s influence several shows are now airing on other networks with female created-by credits, and they include characters which are out and proud.

“I’m so excited for the final episodes of ‘Steven Universe Future’ to be out in the world, and so grateful to our audience for supporting our show for all these years,” Rebecca Sugar said in a statement. “It has been an eye-opening experience to meet the community that has come together around the show: I have been so moved, and I have felt so seen.”

The final batch of episodes for Steven Universe Future begins airing March 6 at 7 PM; two new episodes will air weekly until the grand four-part finale on March 27.

We wish we could say Steven will live on in reruns, but TTG and Gumball don’t seem to be willing to give that real estate up. It will always be streamable on demand, though…somewhere.
