The Avatar The Last Airbender VAs Are Just As Wary Of That Live-Action Series As You Are

If you get an icky feeling in the pit of your stomach whenever you think about the impending Netflix live-action reimagning of Avatar: The Last Airbender, you’re not alone. Not just around these parts, but in the homes of those who played a role in the original series.

Dante Basco, the voice of Zuko, held a virtual reunion this week of voice actors from the show: Jack de Sena (Sokka), Grey Griffin (Azula), Olivia Hack (Ty Lee), Dee Bradley Baker (Momo, Appa), Cricket Leigh (Mai), Jennie Kwan (Princess Suki), and Michaela Murphy (Toph). The question came up of their thoughts on the impending remake, and Baker was the first to reply.

“I just don’t know how you fulfill that any better than this show did,” he said. “I’m open to whatever they do with the live-action series, which I know nothing about, but it’s like, ‘Well, how do you do this better than the way that it was rendered on this show?’ I don’t know how you do that! I hope you can.”

Hack added, “Especially when you’re doing the exact same series, but as live-action. You’re not adding onto it or expanding the universe. You’re doing the same thing, which feels redundant, but I don’t know. I’m not saying anything.” Too late, you just did.

The reason we have to fear the worst is because creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the project last summer and the reason given was “creative differences.” Konietzko said they were open to anything that was “in line with the spirit and integrity of Avatar” but the direction Netflix wanted to take the show flew counter to that.

But hey — this project was announced all the way back in 2018 and we still haven’t seen a shot from the set, or even heard any casting news. Maybe it won’t happen? It’s the best anyone can hope for now.
