Today we got our first look at the return of the Addams Family in MGM’s new self-titled animated feature. Is the world ready for another trip back inside the Addams mansion?
For those of you who think it’s weird to see the Addams Family as cartoons, the whole thing STARTED as a cartoon — a series of one-panel gags drawn by Charles Addams in the New Yorker during the 1930’s. The designs in this movie are actually what the family originally looked like in those cartoons, bulging eyes and all.
This isn’t the first time they’ve been animated either….the Addams Family made their ink-and-paint debuts in a 1973 episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies called “Wednesday Is Missing.” Their own Saturday Morning series appeared one year later.
The Addamses returned to Saturday Mornings in the 90s with a new series on ABC that lasted two seasons and spawned an NES game, plus one Honey Nut Cheerios commercial. That was in the midst of a new Addams wave brought on by a pair of live-action feature films starring Anjelica Houston and Raul Julia. Point is, the Addams Family do not stay dead for long.
The new movie stars stars the voices of Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, and Allison Janney as the movie’s villain, Margaux Needler (who is unseen here). Theaters across America get creepy and kooky October 11.
