The 2021 Annie Noms Are Out

The nominations for the 49th annual Annie Awards have been revealed — the only awards ceremony where it’s impossible to get snubbed for being animated because EVERYTHING is animated. There are 31 categories in all, but here are some of the most coveted trophies of the bunch:

  • Encanto
  • Luca
  • Raya and the Last Dragon
  • Sing 2
  • The Mitchells Vs The Machines

As usual, this category is mostly Disney competing with itself. We’d be pleasantly surprised with a Mitchells win but the competition here is STIFF. Sing 2 doesn’t have a prayer.

  • Arcane
Episode: When These Walls Come Tumbling Down
  • Bob’s Burgers
    Episode: Fingers-loose
  • Love, Death + Robots
    Episode: Ice
  • Star Wars Visions
    Episode: The Duel
  • Tuca & Bertie
    Episode: The Dance

This is another toughie. We’d be happy with any of these.

  • Amphibia
    Episode: True Colors
  • Carmen Sandiego
    Episode: The Himalayan Rescue Caper
  • Dug Days
    Episode: Science
  • Maya And The Three
Episode: The Sun And The Moon
  • We The People
    Episode: Active Citizenship

I have not seen Amphibia (yet), but I’m told the episode “True Colors” had to air with a warning before it stating it was “too strong for young children.” I’d give ’em the award just for pulling off something like that on the Disney Channel.

  • Arcane
    Episode: The Monster You Created
  • Maya and the Three
    Episode: Chapter 4: The Skull
  • Muppet Babies
    Episode: Gonzo-Rella
  • The Mighty Ones
    Episode: Berry’s Pet Threat
  • Tuca & Bertie
    Episode: Planteau

This is one of the few categories that has content for both adults and children lumped together. It’s hardly fair because however amazing “Gonzo-rella” might be, it’s never going to beat the episode of Arcane where Jinx [SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER]

  • Encanto
    John Leguizamo (Bruno)
  • Encanto
    Stephanie Beatriz (Mirabel)
  • Luca
    Jack Dylan Grazer (Alberto Scorfano)
  • Raya and the Last Dragon
    Kelly Marie Tran (Raya)
  • The Mitchells vs. The Machines
    Abbi Jacobson (Katie Mitchell)

Who do you think was better in Encanto: Beatriz or Leguizamo? Jack Dylan Grazer would simply say “Silencio Bruno.”

If you don’t see your favorite 2021 show in this list yet, it’s more than likely somewhere else. Practically every series of any quality has a shot at winning an Annie — even Arlo The Alligator Boy got a nom somewhere. Check out the full list here. We’ll tell you who actually wins after the Annies are held on February 26.
