“Superman: Legacy”, the much anticipated new reboot of the live-action theatrical DC Universe orchestrated by James Gunn this time, just had a title change. Fittingly, this announcement came on what is generally considered in pop culture to be Superman’s birthday, on February 29th. Now simply called Superman, the movie is still on track to be released in July of next year.
James Gunn announced on Instagram the title change, along with sharing a new look at the Superman logo and suit (see the featured image at the top of this article), with the following message – ““Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday, When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.” Gunn serves as both director and writer for this new movie.
Recently Gunn also shared a behind the scenes photo of the cast and some of the crew (pictured below), including leading actors David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor). Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela de Faría, and Sara Sampaio are also part of the cast, with some of them portraying other heroes (i.e., Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Merced as Hawkgirl, Gathergi as Mister Terrific, and Carrigan as Metamorpho).
This new Superman movie will be among the first projects in this new DC Universe (the first project scheduled for release later this year, is an animated series featuring the Creature Commandos), supposed to be followed by other titles such as The Authority, The Brave and the Bold (a Batman & Robin movie), Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Swamp Thing. A few TV series were also announced, presumably all set within this new continuity, such as the aforementioned Creature Commandos, and live-action series including a new season of Peacemaker, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost and last but not least, Booster Gold. All of these are part of the first chapter of this new DC Universe, called “Gods and Monsters”.
While it remains to be seen how successful or entertaining these projects will be, this new Superman movie seems to be off to a good start and promises to be a more optimistic and fun take on the character, at least when compared to the previous Man of Steel movie, which is already over a decade old at this point. Superman is set to premiere on July 11, 2025.
