Are we getting a Supergirl movie? Deadline confirmed today Warner Bros. is looking into it. How soon could Kara Zor-El wind up a big box office attraction?
No directors or actors are attached yet…the Supergirl movie is still in the scripting phase. The assigned writer is Oren Uziel, whose track record is spotty — he penned 22 Jump Street (good), The Cloverfield Paradox (bad), and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie (no one can judge yet). At least we know it’ll be better than the 1984 Supergirl movie, and that Kara will probably face bigger threats than a runaway backhoe.
The next two DC Universe movies are Aquaman, followed by Shazam. After that comes Wonder Woman 1984, filming now, and The Flash, which begins shooting in March. Given the circumstances, it’s possible there will be a Flash TV series at the same time as a Flash movie….and now it’s also possible there will be two versions of Supergirl on the big and small screens simultaneously.
Which makes WB’s self-imposed “no Superman or Batman TV shows” rule all the more absurd. If The Flash and even Supergirl — basically Superman with a different chromosome — can exist in both markets, why must we constantly get “almost Superman and Batman but not quite” TV spinoffs?
If the presence of a TV series using the same characters has any potential of “watering down” the box office value, I guess we’re about to find out. The Supergirl movie currently has no release date.
