Half a year ago, Warner Brothers revealed that they are teaming with WIT Studio (the studio behind the first three seasons of Attack on Titan and SpyXFamily) to create a new Suicide Squad series in the isekai genre. For those not in the know, the isekai genre involves characters transported to a fantasy world and has been a dominant subgenre of anime. This is definitely not the first time a Japanese animation studio has worked on a DC Comics property as titles like Batman Ninja and Batman: Gotham Knight have earlier combined anime with the DC Universe.
It has been a while since we have heard any updates about the series, but now we have an expanded Japanese voice cast list from what was known last December. The information comes from a recent WIT Studio announcement that many of the voice actors will appear as part of a panel at Anime Japan 2024 in Tokyo, on March 23 at 9:15 a.m. JST (March 22, 4:15 p.m. PST).
From that press release, the updated cast list includes:
- Anna Nagase as of Harley Quinn
- Yuuichirou Umehara as the Joker
- Reigo Yamaguchi as Deadshot
- Jun Fukuyama as Clayface
- Taku Yashiro as Rick Flag
- Kujira as Amanda Waller
- Reina Ueda as Fione
- Mamiko Noto as Aldora
- Chika Anzai as Katana
- Jun Fukushima as Cecil
- Takehito Koyasu as Peacemaker
- Subaru Kimura as King Shark
The updated voice cast list also allows a clearer confirmation of which character lineup will be in this incarnation of the Squad, barring any surprise characters not revealed yet. From this cast list, this incarnation will be heavily influenced by the recent live action film adaptations from the DC Extended Universe. The English dub has yet to be revealed so we do not know whether or not any DCEU actors will reprise their roles or if any of the voice actors from other animated incarnations of these characters, such as the voice cast from the Max Harley Quinn animated series, will reprise their roles or if they will go with a completely different voice cast. Voice casting for DC animated projects has always been hard to predict, so it’s hard to say. We also see some unfamiliar character names as Fione, Cecil, and Aldora, who have been confirmed to be characters from the magical land in which the Suicide Squad have been transported. Warner Brothers has also released new character designs and they are as follows:
An exact release date still has yet to be confirmed, other than “2024”. Look for more information to be revealed in the weeks ahead.
