“Suicide Squad Isekai” Episode 5 Recap

Another episode of Suicide Squad Isekai came out, and although this episode didn’t have much plot compared to previous episodes, maybe some of this episode will end up being more important than the side story it seems to be. It can be summed up as “the one where they fight a dragon and adopt a baby dragon.” Let’s recap all the events of this episode (mainly the really long fight with dragon) and what did and didn’t work:

The episode begins with the Suicide Squad going to the portal and getting the timer on their bombs reset. Conventional storytelling wisdom about ticking time bombs says that there’s supposed to be major suspense around beating the clock, but shockingly, they casually get it reset with no struggle. The Suicide Squad get orders to help the Kingdom fight against the Empire and they spend a montage fighting the empire. In lieu of highly animated battle scenes, we are treated to a slideshow montage of battles, as the battles against the Empire are not the main focus of this episode.

There is a short scene of the Suicide Squad bonding with the orcs, but the vast majority of this episode’s runtime is devoted to the Suicide Squad fighting a dragon. As Clayface points out, fighting a dragon is a thing that happens in isekai anime. Clayface uses his new earthbending powers, Harley Quinn uses a frying pan Looney Tunes style and, Deadshot shoots things. This time, we have some drama as Deadshot is low on ammo as bullets are hard to come by in a fantasy world. He attempts to use his last bullet on the dragon when it tried to eat King Shark, but the dragon has an amazing move able to deflect the bullet by closing the eye that Deadshot shot at. Despite the fact that bullets are scarce, the Suicide Squad has rocket launchers and Harley Quinn hands Deadshot the rocket launcher. Like the Ratcatcher fight, Deadshot saves the day again and kills the dragon – or at least, eventually kills the dragon, as the dragon flails for about two minutes before it really for real dies. The corpse almost lands on top of Deadshot and he falls off a cliff to avoid getting crushed, but King Shark ends up saving him.  The fight isn’t exactly consistently on model as characters look “off” at times during it. This was a decent fight, but WIT’s had flashier fights.

In the next scene, the Suicide Squad contemplate what to do with the dragon’s egg. Harley holds the egg as it hatches. Harley adopts the baby dragon and names it Arthur after King Arthur. I am assuming the dragon is to be this series “Pikachu” or obligatory cute animal mascot, despite appearing five whole episodes into the series. The whole purpose of this episode seemed to have an obligatory dragon fight and to introduce Arthur the adorable dragon to the cast.

At the very end of the episode, Harley’s Suicide Squad team is confronted by two enemies of the enemy Suicide Squad team, which includes The Thinker and Enchantress. Because of a trailer that recently came out, this reveal has been spoiled in advance. Those wanting superhero vs supervillain fights should be excited about the next episode.

Overall, a decent episode that introduces a cute dragon mascot to the series, even if most of the episode didn’t really advance the “Suicide Squad vs. Suicide Squad” plot until the very end. Side stories about dragons are fine and all, but next week should be the “Squad vs. Squad” fight that has been hyped as the meat of the series.
