Steven Universe Future Announced Today

Steven Universe: The Movie seemed to wrap up the entire series pretty nicely, yet creator Rebecca Sugar has been insisting that “it’s not over.” We didn’t know what she meant until today, when Cartoon Network unveiled a new sequel series, Steven Universe Future.

Future takes the new “two years later” continuity established in the movie and expands upon it, to the extent that its new theme song (beautifully animated, by the way) is taken directly from the movie. The official plot description reads “After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own.”

The show has only just been announced, and there’s still some confusion over what exactly it is. Polygon, which broke the news earlier today, reported that the show was a “limited series” and that this would be the “final season.” Ian Jones-Quartey, creator of OK KO and contributor to all things Steven, corrected the site by stating this is more like “Steven Shippuden” and more seasons are possible if CN wants them.

So the question of exactly how long Steven’s future will last is still up in the air. Will we eventually get a “Beven Beuiniverse” series centered around his kid? Time will tell. A premiere date for Steven Universe Future has not been announced.
