There is almost always a question when it comes to indie games of “what does it mean for them to be successful?” After all, since they’re not mainstream games, asking them to sell millions of units at times isn’t always a fair ask, and that’s completely understandable. That’s why when it comes to the ones that do well, and go beyond expectations, we celebrate them. And to that end, Stardew Valley has not only broken all expectations, it redefines just how good an indie game can sell.
Because as you can see via the tweet below, Stardew Valley has sold over 20 million copies as of March 2022. And also as that tweet notes, 13 million of those copies are just on PC!
This isn’t just a “staggering result” this is something that likely isn’t going to be passed due to just how popular this game is. It’s something that anyone can pick up and play and enjoy to their hearts content, with restarting the game being an option many do just to see what adventures they can have with their “new life”.

And you might think, “but it’s just a farming simulator.” But no, it’s much more than that. The team behind the game went to work and made sure that anyone can play this game however they wanted. If they wanted to focus on farming? They can do that.
If they wanted to do some adventures? They can do that. If they wanted to marry someone (or go be with various people), they can do that too! The freedom and detail in this game is almost hypnotizing, and that’s what keeps bringing people to the mix. And word of mouth no doubt led it to being a 20 million unit seller.
So in regards to indie games, this is their king, long may it reign.
