Star Wars Squadrons Announced For October 2

It’s been a while since we had a Star Wars game devoted entirely to the specific action of wars in the stars. Star Wars Squadrons, announced by publisher EA and developer Motive Studios this morning, puts you in the cockpit for some good ol’ starship dogfighting.

The trailer below lays out the scenario for the single-player mode: the second Death Star has just exploded. The Empire is in tatters, and the Ewoks are celebrating. But the fight isn’t over…and you’ll be playing from the perspective of two pilots, one flying for the New Republic and the other for the remnants of the Empire. Missions will alternate between the two characters.

The multiplayer will consist of the Vanguard Squadron (good guys) vs. the Titan Squadron (Dark Side) in five on five battles. There will be two ways to play: Dogfights, a basic “us vs them” match where the only goal is to blow up as much of the opponent’s fleet as you can, and Fleet Battles, where the first team to find and destroy the opposing team’s flagship is the winner.

Star Wars Squadrons will take you both to places familiar — Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan have been confirmed as locations — and unfamiliar. EA and Motive have yet to share what planets and constellations we haven’t seen yet. A VR mode will be included with the PS4 and PC versions, allowing you to step directly into the action.

“We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamt about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter,” says Ian Frazier, creative director at Motive Studios. “Through the collaboration of the teams at Motive and Lucasfilm, we’ve been able to create a high-fidelity starfighter experience with an authentic storyline that invites Star Wars fans to explore never-before-seen corners of the galaxy in their own ship.”

Star Wars Squadrons will take off for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC on October 2, at a cool price of $39.99. More of the game will be shown off during the EA Play event later this week.
