Video game publisher Ubisoft released a new trailer for “Star Wars Outlaws” today, showcasing “in engine” footage revealing the game play and story for the upcoming game.
Here’s the trailer:
The story focuses on a Kay Vess (and her companion/pet Nix), who end up ticking off crime boss Slirro, leader of the criminal syndicate Zerek Besh. Kay ends up going on the run and looking to perform to perform the “ultimate heist” (so yes, if it sounds familiar, it does sound like the plot of “Solo: A Star Wars Story”). Other elements of the criminal world that have been introducted previouly in Star Wars films (or in Disney+ shows) also appear, such as the Crimson Dawn (the crime group founded by Darth Maul seen in “Solo”), the Pike Syndicate (last seen in the Boba Fett series), and Jabba the Hutt’s cartel. There are reportedly elements of a “Reputation System” in the plot (allowing you to gain notoriety and credit among the different criminal factions), which could influence the plot.
There are Easter eggs such as an appearance by a Krayt dragon (last seen in “The Mandalorian” Season 2) and a glimpse of Han Solo frozen in Carbonite, placing this story inbetween “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”). The world featured at the start of the trailer is “Canto Bight”, the casino world featured in “The Last Jedi”. Overall, just good, solid Star Wars references that the diehard fans can enjoy while providing plenty of worlds to explore for the more casual fans.
If there’s one criticism, it’s that the plot (as mentioned previously) once again takes place during the time period of the Empire. The recent “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” and “Jedi: Survivor” video games (by EA studio Respawn) also take place during the period where the Empire rules the galaxy, though at least with this game, “the Empire” is not the main villain to overcome. Instead, our “hero” seems to not care one way or the other for the Empire or the Rebellion. So that’s promising.
“Star Wars Outlaws” is coming to Playstation 5, Xbox Series S and X and PC on August 30th, 2024.
