The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run

Nick: “Spongebob Squarepants is the hit that won’t die. We want a second Spongebob movie. Keep in mind CG is the new hip and happening thing, so the movie must have CG animation.”

Animation crew: “Fine, we’ll give you CG…as the last act in a movie that’s mostly 2D, and then we’ll cut the trailers and TV ads entirely from those scenes to fool everyone! Yaggleaggleaggleaggle (Spongebob trademark laugh)!”

Nick: “Fine, we’ll let you get away with that trick once, but never again. Now we want a third Spongebob movie, and this time, it’s going to be all CGI. Do you hear me? ALL CGI.”

Animation crew: “Why though?”

Nick: “Because there hasn’t been a hit 2D animated movie in decades. That might have something to do with there being no 2D animated movies MADE in decades, but by our twisted logic, no one will buy a ticket for a 2D movie anymore. And yes, we’re aware Spongebob is a 2D show that has no trouble finding an audience. They might watch 2D animation on TV, but definitely not in the theaters. This is all about the THEATERS, you hear? THE THEATERS.”

Nick: “Uhh, we’re putting this on television.”

Nickelodeon and its parent company Viacom announced today due to circumstances beyond their control, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run will make its debut not in theaters, as originally planned pre-pandemic, but on Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access). Those who don’t get Paramount+ will have the option of paying $19.99 to watch it on VOD services, but “for a limited time.”

In The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run, Spongebob comes home one evening to find his pet snail Gary has gone missing. He and Patrick set off on a road trip to track him down, ultimately landing in a faceoff with King Poseidon. The movie features the voices of series mainstays Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence and Mr. Lawrence, but also features special guests Awkwafina, Danny Trejo, Tiffany Haddish, Snoop Dogg, and Keanu Reeves. (Some of these people will be appearing as themselves.)

The movie will also have a scene set at Kamp Koral revealing how Spongebob and Gary met, which ties in with the prequel series Paramount+ will be debuting on the same day. Both The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On The Run and the first six episodes of Spongebob: Kamp Koral will premiere on the service March 4.
