Everyone’s eagerly awaiting the sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, yet we still know very little about it. Up until now, only two characters have been confirmed to return, and they’re the most obvious ones: Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, played by Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld respectively.
But as of now we can confirm the first special guest of which there will likely be many: Jessica Drew, known in tights as Spider-Woman. We also know who will be playing her…it’s Issa Rae, who last appeared theatrically in The Lovebirds and The Photograph and is currently starring in the final season of HBO’s Insecure. (Rae also created the show.)
Spider-Woman exists because Marvel feared someone else would trademark the name in response to Spider-Man’s popularity. So they quickly came up with Jessica, who is very different from Peter Parker or any of his ilk despite sharing similar powers. Ms. Drew can climb up walls, project energy blasts and even shoot venom (not even Venom can do that and it’s his entire name). But she’s more of a spy than a superhero, and sometimes works for SHIELD instead of the Avengers. Spider-Woman will bring a lot to the table that’s new…which is a good thing.
In fact, Jessica Drew was already scheduled to appear in animated form in the Spider-Gwen / Ghost Spider spinoff movie, which will be released after Spider-Verse 2. We’ll not only get Spider-Woman in that movie but also Cindy Moon, AKA Silk, the comics’ newest heroine and the Marvel equivalent of Minimoose (SHE WAS THERE THE WHOOOOLE TIME!)
Spider-Verse 2 is a sequel big enough to need three directors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, responsible for making the first one so great, will return to write the sequel script alongside David Callaham. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 will be released October 7, 2022.
