Which would you rather watch: yet another TV ad for Venom or a glorious new colorful trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse? Any decent American would pick the latter, and so would most Canadians. So what’re you waiting for?
Into The Spider-Verse centers on Miles Morales, who’s just starting out as a superhero in New York, and having a rough time of it. He thought he was alone in his struggles until a man named Peter Parker fell through a dimensional warp and landed in his neighborhood. Then a blonde lady in a hood showed up, and then there was this pig…
Perhaps the greatest gift Into The Spider-Verse has given us is the cinematic introduction of Peter Porker, The Amazing Spider-Ham. He’s been given the voice of comedian John Mulaney and it fits like a glove. There’s nothing he says during this trailer that isn’t golden. The black-and-white trenchcoated man is the Parker from Spider-Man Noir, a comic released in 2009 that reimagined the Spider-Man characters in a 1930’s-styled “hard boiled detective genre” universe.
The anime girl is named Peni Parker (we’re told it’s pronounced “Penny”) and is not only the youngest Spider-Person age-wise, but chronologically (she made her first comic appearance in 2014). We don’t anticipate anyone more recent unless the video game Spider-Man shows up.
This is the best trailer Sony has released to date for this movie, and it could very well become the blockbuster of the holiday season if it’s as top-quality as what’s implied here. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse comes to our dimension December 14.
