Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

It’s always nice when a friend you haven’t seen in a while drops by over the weekend…though if they show up unannounced, you may not be prepared for it. Seeing as how it’s typical of Sony to produce trailers for their trailers, these days social media lets us know of an imminent first look at an anticipated movie as much as a week in advance. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse decided to handle it differently. We just turned on our computers this evening and BAM, two-minute teaser.

In the case of Miles Morales, the Spider-Person at the center of the original film, he gets a surprise of his own when Gwen Stacy, the Spider-Gwen / Spider-Woman / Ghost Spider of her own universe, drops by. Since you’ve watched Into The Spider-Verse just as many times as I have, you’re well-aware it ends with a sequel-bait scene where Miles is contacted by Gwen for….an unexplained reason. Now we know the reason…ready for it?

She just wanted to hang out. Yup, that’s it. (Or hang sideways, as spider-themed superheroes do.) The bigger question is how she bridged the gap between their worlds when it was supposedly closed up in the first movie. The answer to that one will have to wait for a full trailer.

But the teaser contains a mindblower of its own: Across The Spider-Verse is TWO sequels, and this is just part ONE! All the actors are back: Shameik Moore reprises Miles, Hailee Steinfeld plays Gwen, Oscar Isaac is playing newcomer Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, and Issa Rae is voicing a yet to be revealed role. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are back too as head writers and producers, alongside Avi Arad, Amy Pascal and Christina Steinberg.

This movie is so big it has THREE directors: Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson and Kemp Powers. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will be released exclusively in theaters October 7, 2022.
