At times, the Golden Globes aren’t given as much praise and attention as the Oscars, but they are still an award show that is respected and many do indeed strive to get a Golden Globe because it shows that they are appreciated for what they did. Even when it comes to a category like: Best Motion Picture – Animated. Despite 2020 having wrecked a lot of plans to release certain animated movies, many did indeed come out, and in the end, Soul was the one who took home the Golden Globe.
Ironically enough, there were two Disney/Pixar films in the category for best motion picture – animated, with the other being Onward. That film was released just before the pandemic hit and is the only Pixar film to not make a ton of money at the box office due to it being cut short form its time there. Though it should be noted that it went to VOD right after being pulled from theaters and did well there.
The other films nominated in the category were The Croods: A New Age, Onward, Over the Moon, and Wolfwalkers.
Regardless, it’s not too much of a surprise that Soul won in the overall as many praised the film through and through. Not to mention its Christmas release ensured that numerous people watched it and it indeed resonated with both critics and viewers. Especially since this was the first Pixar film to feature and African-American lead character, played/voiced by Jaime Foxx.
More than likely, this momentum will carry over to the Oscars and when that happens it’ll be even more interesting to see what other winners carry over from the Golden Globes.
Animation-wise, both Disney and Pixar have a lot they want to release this year. Including Raya and the Last Dragon coming to Disney+ and theaters in a few days, Luca from Pixar just getting its first trailer recently, and more.
